One man dead after police shooting

COMMERCE CITY -- One man is dead and another is recovering from gunshot wounds after an accident and a botched carjacking near the Reunion subdivision Thursday afternoon.

It happened shortly before 4 p.m. near 107th Avenue and Chambers Road. The names of the suspects, both in their early 20s, were not released early Friday morning. The names of the detectives involved in the shootings were not released either.

Lt. Chuck Saunier said the problems started because of a rear-end collision. The two suspects got out of their car and robbed the other driver at gunpoint.  Saunier said as the two suspects tried to get away from the area, they lost control of their car. It went into some trees near 107th Avenue and Jasper Street and caused a flat tire.

The two detectives, who were in the area on an unrelated investigation, tried to stop the suspects' vehicle. But the two men got out of their car and tried to carjack other motorists at gunpoint near 120th Avenue and Chambers Road. Shots were fired. The two suspects were hit, and then they attempted to run from the area. Police captured them after a short foot chase. The surviving suspect is in a local hospital. His condition was not known early Friday morning.

The Adams County Critical Incident Team is handling the investigation of the shootings. There's no word on the status of the detectives.

The intersection of 120th and Chambers was closed to through traffic until about 10 p.m. Thursday.
